Smart schedule checking for potato growing

In potato growing, correct product use is crucial: to control diseases such as Phytophthora efficiently, to avoid resistance and to stay fully within the regulations. For advisers that means juggling dozens of products, modes of action (FRAC groups), maxima and exceptions, combined in schedules of up to twenty applications.

BASF came to IT Licious with a clear request: turn that complexity into a simple, reliable decision aid that the dealer and the grower can use together.

The challenge

  • The rules on FRAC groups, alternation of modes of action and maximum applications are technically correct but complex, error-prone when interpreted manually and riddled with exceptions (such as cymoxanil).
  • They differ depending on the number of applications in the schedule and are hard to check quickly in the field.
  • The solution had to be readable on mobile, work in two languages (NL/FR), be commercially usable for BASF and above all make immediately clear whether a schedule is allowed or not.
The approach

How Schemapatat works

Together with BASF we translated all rules, advice and product information into one Flutter web application. The application automatically does what normally takes a lot of time and expertise.

01

A schedule per grower

The adviser creates a schedule per farmer and keeps all their schedules in one overview.

02

Products per application

For each application they search and select products, up to twenty applications per schedule. Each product lists its modes of action.

03

Automatic checking

The application checks all FRAC rules, guards the maxima per mode of action, checks the alternation between applications and takes the exceptions into account.

04

Green or red, plus PDF

Green? The schedule is fine. Red? It says right away what needs to change. The schedule is exported as a PDF and shared with the grower.

A spray schedule in Schemapatat: six applications with products, their modes of action and red warnings where the alternation is wrong
The scheduleThe chosen products per application with their modes of action. Application 2 repeats group 22 from the previous application, applications 4 and 6 lack a second mode of action: the application says immediately what needs to happen.
What it delivered

The result

01

Immediate certainty

Advisers see at a glance whether a product or combination of products is allowed within the full schedule.

02

Fewer mistakes, more confidence

Because all rules are built in, the risk of incorrect advice or exceeded limits disappears.

03

Fully correct alternation

The application automatically guards:

  • at least two different modes of action per application
  • no repetition in consecutive applications
  • the maximum use per FRAC group
04

Flexible up to 20 applications

From simple schedules to intensive programmes: everything stays clear and correct.

05

Mobile and shareable

Perfectly readable on smartphone and tablet, ideal in the field or at the farm. Every schedule is exported as a PDF, with any errors clearly listed.

06

Commercial value for BASF

Products such as Privest and Suprova get clear, integrated visibility in a substantively strong tool, without compromising the objectivity of the check.

07

Bilingual, one solution

With NL and FR in one application, and a personal account per user, the tool is immediately usable throughout Belgium.

08

Delivered fast

From idea to working application in exceptionally little time, without compromising on quality or ease of use.

What this means for your project

  • Expertise as software: rules that live in people's heads, spreadsheets and manuals today, we translate into logic that applies what an expert knows correctly every time.
  • A tool in your brand: a genuinely useful application is also a commercial channel, with your products integrated without harming credibility.
  • Web, available right away: no installation, but accounts, several languages and an export your users can share, on desktop and on the smartphone.
