What is AWS?

AWS, or Amazon Web Services in full, is a bit like a gigantic electricity grid, but for computers across the whole internet. Imagine using electricity at home without having to build and maintain your own power plant. AWS does something similar for everything to do with computers and the internet.

What does AWS do?

It offers storage, computing power to run programs, and all kinds of technical tools, all over the internet. So you do not need to install expensive computers or servers at home or in the office. You essentially rent what you need from AWS and use it for as long as necessary, just like you would rent a bike or a car.

What is ECS?

ECS, or Amazon Elastic Container Service, can be compared to a smart, self-regulating container port for web applications. It is a service offered by Amazon to make it easier to manage applications that are split into small, independent pieces (called containers).

What are containers?

Think of containers as small, self-contained packages of software that hold everything they need to run. They are very handy because you can run them anywhere without worrying about the underlying technology.

How does ECS work?

ECS helps you organise all these containers and run them efficiently on a cloud network:

• Automatic management: Imagine you have a fleet of trucks that constantly need loading and unloading. ECS is like a coordinator that makes sure this process runs smoothly, without you having to manage every detail yourself.
• Scalability: Just as you would deploy more trucks when you have more to transport, ECS can automatically add more containers when you need more computing capacity, or fewer when things are quieter.
• Security: Each of these containers can be sealed and secured, just like you would lock a container in a port.

Why is ECS useful?

• Efficiency: ECS makes sure your applications run well by using only the resources needed, which saves costs.
• Convenience: You do not have to constantly check the technical state of your containers yourself; ECS keeps an eye on everything.
