Impact

All the street art of Limburg, from Lommel to Maaseik, in one catalogue on your phone

Cycling and walking routes on the map that lead you from artwork to artwork

Launched on the App Store and Google Play, in Dutch and English

SAGA brings contemporary art into public space: murals and graphic art by local and international artists, spread across the whole of Limburg. For three years the organisation professionally mapped all those works. To open that collection up to everyone, we built the Saga app: a free guide that lets you discover the artworks near you, learn more about their makers and travel from one work to the next by bike or on foot.

Challenges

  • Keeping a large, growing collection of artworks, artists and routes clear on a small screen, for visitors who may only use the app for a single day.
  • Bringing routes and artworks together on one map, connected to the Limburg cycling network and the Hoge Kempen National Park.
  • Translating Saga's outspoken visual identity into an app that stands out in the stores while feeling smooth and accessible.

Solutions

  • Three ways into the collection: find a route, find an artwork or find an artist, with artworks and artists also available as their own tabs.
  • A Discover map with two layers: the artworks around you and the curated cycling and walking routes, with distance and the works along the way.
  • Detail pages per artwork with a photo series, the artists involved, the location and background information, supplemented with making-of footage for some works.
  • One Flutter codebase for iOS and Android, bilingual (NL/EN), published on the App Store and Google Play.

Results

  • A free app on the App Store and Google Play, launched alongside Saga's printed catalogue.
  • Visitors find the works near them, read who made them and cycle curated routes from artwork to artwork.
  • A collection that keeps growing: new artworks, artists and routes are added without rebuilding the app.

What this means for your project

  • A consumer app that is in the stores: from concept and design to publication on the App Store and Google Play, for iOS and Android at once.
  • Maps and routes at the heart of the experience: locations, routes and the visitor together on one map, also for tourism, heritage or events.
  • Content-driven and multilingual: a catalogue your organisation keeps adding to, in several languages, without a new release for every change.
